THIS IS THE BONE
THE STORY OF TIRA'S MARROW BONE
ONE EVENING in 1999 Tira had one of these marrow bones that we got for her at the grocery store. We were watching TV when Tira came over and just stood in front of us. We thought she was playing with the bone and wanted to play with us. We soon figured out that the bone was stuck on her lower jaw. Her tongue and lower jaw were wedged inside the bone. This seemed very comical at first. We tried to get it off by turning or otherwise maneuvering the bone or her head. We could not even loosen it. After a while, she would not let us try anymore. We gave her some time to see if she could work it off by herself. This situation was not funny any more. She could not eat, drink, bark, lick, or retrieve. Finally we brought Tira to the vet. He thought at first it would be no problem to manipulate the bone and her mouth to release it. No luck.
IV anesthesia to relax Tira and more manipulation finally
removed the bone.
